Ten Traits Of Successful Dieters

When it comes to losing weight, there are a whole range of fads, foods, and fitness ideas to choose from. Some swear by the Atkins Diet, whereas others insist that the only way to shed the pounds is to commit to daily exercise rituals.

However, here at Bodychef, where we’ve helped thousands of people to lose weight and live more healthily, we’ve found that successful dieters generally have ten key traits:

1. They don’t weigh themselves every day

Fewer things are more dispiriting than stepping onto the scales and finding out you’ve lost less weight than you thought. However, this doesn’t always mean that you’re not still on track. After all, burning fat and gaining muscle at the same time may result in no weight loss whatsoever (and even weight gain, in some cases). Therefore, don’t take the scales too seriously.

2. The make exercise enjoyable

In order to diet successfully, it’s important to enjoy the exercise part. If you don’t, you’re far more likely to throw in the towel early. Try to increase your enjoyment by walking in the great outdoors, taking in your surroundings. Or, if this isn’t enough, keep yourself entertained by listening to music or a podcast. Other options include exercising with a friend, or varying your route from time to time to reduce boredom.

3. They get on with it

If you’re the kind of person who will reel off excuse after excuse for not exercising—‘it’s too late now, I’ll never get to sleep’ or ‘I really should weed the garden’—you’re not alone. However, there is a solution: try getting up just half an hour earlier each morning. This way, you’ll have time for a solid 25 minutes’ exercise before the excuses even have a chance to set in.

4. They know the importance of ‘little and often’

When it comes to dieting, consistency is key. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and you’re not going to lose those 15 pounds in a day, either. Therefore, work on turning exercise into a routine; something that becomes a fixed part of your life. You don’t even need to do a great deal each day, just make sure it’s consistent.

5. They get addicted

It will come as no surprise to health fanatics to learn that exercise is addictive. The more you do, the more you want to do. This is all down to the chemicals released by the body during exercise, which can leave you feeling euphoric and can act as a real incentive to keep it up once you’ve made the initial lifestyle adjustment.

6. They ignore the fads

What came first, the diet or the weight-loss fad? Who knows? All we know is that fads have always been there, always tempting people with their promises of quick fixes and overnight dieting success. Unfortunately, fad or no fad, the law of the universe remains the same: you get in what you put out. Successful dieters know this, and ignore the fads.

7. They’re prepared

Fail to prepare; prepare to fail—this adage is no truer than when it comes to dieting. And this is the reason why so many of our clients set aside exactly what they want to eat ready for the next day. This reduces the risk of forgetting your lunch and relying on convenience food throughout the day.

8. They don’t compare themselves to others

While it can be tempting to envy your neighbour who somehow manages to shed weight by the stone, this isn’t a good idea. Ultimately, no two people are the same, and this also applies to dieting.
We all have different metabolic rates and we all lose and gain weight in different ways. Envying somebody else’s progress is unlikely to make any difference to your own.

9. They know the secret of the power walk

Dramatically changing your routine—going from practically no exercise to an intense daily workout—can be a huge challenge for anybody. Luckily, you do have a secret weapon: the power walk. Power walking is a great way of increasing your heart rate without putting too much physical and mental pressure on yourself. And you can even do it on the treadmill whilst watching TV. What’s not to like?

10. They realise that nothing worth having comes easy

This may seem obvious, but it’s often forgotten. Put the effort in and you will succeed.
